Why Vulvas?

What spurred me to make vulva art? I was working on a diamond painting when I started thinking about the ways people are shamed for characteristics of their vulvas/vaginas. How they look, how the smell, how they feel, the impacts of intercourse and shaming for engaging in sexual activities. I wanted to make something that glamorized vulvas and celebrated femininity, strength, power, and pleasure that comes from having a vulva/vagina. I wanted to make art that would make persons with vulvas/vaginas feel empowered and fight the negative stereotypes perpetuated in society and the porn industry by making something beautiful. Making vulva art became a tool to explore my own femininity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and acceptance of my own insecurities that came with having a vulva/vagina. It became one of my favourite subject manners and what I’m most known for in my artwork. It started with gluing beads onto the glass of a picture frame then covering it with epoxy resin then my art evolved with vulvas to include beading with metal wire on illustration paper, metal wire and beads, beading onto cardstock and occasionally onto felt. It’s a continually evolving subject in which I have branched out to other mediums as well such as watercolors, pastels, acrylics, and paper cut outs. I’m excited to see where this subject takes me next.
